The Power of Gratitude During the Christmas Season

Image
As Christmas approaches, it’s easy to focus on what we don’t have. The clothes we couldn’t buy, the plans that didn’t work out, the year that didn’t turn out the way we hoped. Everywhere we look, there are reminders of expectations—celebrations, gifts, and pictures of happiness that can quietly make us feel like we’re falling behind. But Christmas also offers us something powerful, if we’re willing to slow down enough to notice it: gratitude. Gratitude doesn’t mean pretending everything is perfect. It doesn’t mean ignoring pain, struggle, or disappointment. It simply means acknowledging what is still standing, even when many things feel broken. Sometimes, gratitude begins with the smallest things—life, health, family, or even the strength to keep going despite everything. For many people, especially in Nigeria, this year has not been easy. Rising costs, uncertainty, and personal challenges have weighed heavily on everyday life. In moments like this, gratitude becomes less about a...

MAINTAINING YOUR "STEEZE"

Image
In  a world where copying others often feels safer than being yourself, staying true to your "steeze" takes real courage. Everywhere you turn, there’s pressure to look like this person, talk like that person, or live life according to what’s trending. Over time, it becomes easy to forget who you really are and start moving with the crowd just to feel accepted. But your "steeze"—your personal style, mindset, and way of seeing things—can’t be borrowed. It’s not something you pick up overnight or fake successfully. It’s built from your experiences, your struggles, your failures, and the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Every small decision where you choose what feels right over what feels popular adds another layer to it. Being authentic doesn’t mean trying to be different for attention. It simply means being honest with yourself. It means knowing what aligns with you and having the confidence to stand by it, even when others don’t get it. Many people lose themsel...

When Tradition Turns Dangerous: The Case of Masquerades in Agulu

Image
Masquerade activities in Agulu were once a proud symbol of our culture, celebrated for their artistry, discipline, and entertainment. Unfortunately, in recent times, this cultural practice has taken a darker turn. Today, attending or even seeing a masquerade in Agulu can feel like a risky venture. The tradition that once united and educated our community has been overshadowed by cultism, violence, and acts of revenge.  The value of masquerades is no longer measured by their cultural performance but by the fear they inspire and the conflicts they ignite. Many residents now avoid public spaces during masquerade outings, prioritizing their safety over cultural participation. This shift is deeply troubling.  Culture should bring people together, not drive them apart. When a tradition threatens lives and public order, its original purpose is lost.   To protect the community and restore peace, decisive action is needed. I strongly support a total ban on masquerade...

AUTHENTICITY SPAWNS IMITATION - Ezenekwe, Franca Ngozi(Ph.D)

Image
In a world where authenticity and counterfeits coexist, discernment and keen observation are essential to distinguish between the two. Unfortunately, values like morals, courtesy, and reverence for righteousness, once integral to human culture, are being redefined and dismissed as obsolete. Social media often exacerbates this issue, where individuals present a facade driven by societal pressures, insecurities, or the desire for acceptance, leading to a loss of true identity and meaningful relationships. This trend is particularly concerning in the realm of faith. God's standards and the truth of the Gospel are under constant attack. Some claim to be preachers and believers yet distort divine principles to accommodate sinful lifestyles, contrary to Jude 1:4. Others dismiss serving God as incompatible with modern living, branding Christianity as outdated. However, Christ's sacrifice and the unchanging Word remain the foundation for eternal hope and purpose (Hebrews 13:8). Educat...

Taxation Without Accountability: Why Nigerians are Angry

Image
Across the world, paying taxes is seen as a civic responsibility because citizens can clearly see the benefits. Roads are good, security is effective, electricity is stable, water is available, healthcare works, and governance is responsive. In such societies, taxes are not forced; they are willingly paid because people trust the system. In Nigeria, unfortunately, the story is very different. In most countries outside Nigeria, taxes are properly accounted for. Governments invest tax revenues in public infrastructure and services that directly improve the lives of citizens. Good roads reduce travel time, stable electricity boosts businesses, reliable internet supports innovation, and strong security protects lives and property. Citizens in these countries enjoy the results of their contributions, and governance feels like a partnership between the people and the state. Here,  however, taxes are imposed without visible returns. Roads remain dilapidated, power supply is unreliable, cl...
